EA FC 27 has released its Closed Beta Patch Notes, covering a wide range of gameplay-related changes that directly affect Ultimate Team experience.
The patch addresses several issues reported by the player community and provides solutions, showing that the official team has not ignored player feedback, which is a positive sign. Below, IGGM.com breaks down some of the most important changes and their potential impact.

Bruiser & Shoulder Challenge
Bruiser PlayStyle seriously disrupted the balance in FC 25 and FC 26. Players could abuse physical challenges and win possession through Bruiser rather than relying on actual skill.
The official team acknowledged a large amount of negative feedback regarding FC 27 closed beta and has made adjustments accordingly.
Shoulder Charges will now be more consistent, but their effectiveness will depend on whether the defender is already side by side with the ball carrier. Shoulder challenges from behind will be significantly less effective.
To prevent players from abusing repeated inputs, defenders who rapidly use Shoulder Charges multiple times while chasing an opponent will slow down because of the arm-extension animation, reducing their effectiveness when tracking back.
This is a very positive direction for the gameplay. It raises the skill requirement and realism of defending, rewards proper defensive positioning, and punishes mindless use of Bruiser.
While bruiser defenders may be affected, they probably won’t become completely useless. If the meta changes, you can also buy FC 27 coins to invest in new players or EVOs to address tactical weaknesses.
Team Press & Defensive Depth
Because Team Press mechanic was also overly effective near the defending team’s penalty area, AI teammates would automatically collapse into defensive positions and take on too much responsibility for the player.
In FIFA 27, Team Press will be completely ineffective when the ball is in the defensive third. When used in the middle and attacking thirds, defenders will have lower pressing efficiency than midfielders and forwards, while defenders stepping forward to press will also be more vulnerable to balls played in behind.
At the same time, the official team has adjusted the defensive depth algorithm so that lower depth settings will be reflected more clearly in actual matches.

AcceleRATE
AcceleRATE system directly affects how players accelerate and sprint. The official team has made three key adjustments.
Triggered Runs will now have a limited distance, meaning players will need to trigger them multiple times to maintain long forward runs.
The bonus provided by AcceleRATE system to Lengthy players has been slightly reduced.
Because Lengthy AcceleRATE was too strong for female players, the requirement has been adjusted so that only female players who are 172 cm or taller can qualify for Lengthy.
AcceleRATE has been repeatedly modified since FIFA 23, causing the meta to constantly shift, and further reversions could still happen.
Player Lock Changes
Player Lock is an advanced technique that allows players to manually control the movement of an off-ball player. The official team acknowledged that its risk-to-reward ratio was unbalanced and has therefore made several changes.
When players activate Player Lock on an off-ball player, the original ball carrier will no longer dribble automatically to evade defenders.
Instead, the player will continue moving in a straight line in the original direction, giving defenders a clearer opportunity to anticipate the movement and apply pressure. The AI-controlled ball carrier will also have a slightly higher pass error rate.
This change is intended to increase the skill requirement and risk associated with advanced controls. However, the root of the problem is that players rely on Player Lock because the game’s default attacking AI provides poor off-ball movement.
If the official team could deliver strong attacking AI and distinct Player ID, this distorted reliance on manually fine-tuning player movement should not exist in the first place.
Player Roles & Attacking Spatial Awareness
Player Roles determine the types of runs and the level of attacking initiative taken by players. The official team stated that the new Attacking Spatial Awareness system will work together with Player Roles to influence attacking movement.
The official team has introduced similar updates more than once, but in the high-intensity competitive environment of FC 26, wide players almost exclusively used Inside Forward, while midfielders mainly used Box-to-Box, Holding, or Playmaker. Other Player Roles were effectively ignored, and this may be difficult to change in FC 27 as well.
While the developers aim to enrich dynamic on-pitch movement through these mechanisms, players in the high-intensity UT competitive landscape tend to quickly identify the most effective strategies. With defensive AI nerfed and movement mechanics overhauled, the choice of players during the game’s opening phase will be critical.
For players looking to quickly discover dominant formations early on, having a substantial supply of FIFA coins is essential for maintaining tactical flexibility. Whether you are experimenting with key midfielders featuring different PlayStyle+ traits or immediately acquiring rising stars who excel under the new Attacking Spatial Awareness mechanics, having enough coins ensures your squad remains competitive as the game’s meta evolves.
Dinked Pass
Ground Passes and Through Passes could both trigger Dinked Passes. The system would also automatically select between two different types of Dinked Passes based on the player’s input:
-
A Dinked Pass toward a teammate
-
A Dinked Pass toward open space
In other words, players previously did not need to fully control where the ball would land, because the game would determine the appropriate direction based on the situation on the pitch.
In EA FC 27, however, Dinked Passes will no longer have their direction determined by the system. Players will need to aim them manually using the left stick or directional input. In short, the mechanic has become more difficult and is no longer as straightforward as before.
Developer Promise
The official team opened the developer notes with a promise to take a cautious approach to early FC 27 updates. The team stated that major gameplay balance adjustments would not be made in the early post-launch updates, with the goal of giving players enough time to learn the new mechanics and explore a variety of playstyles.
Many players believed that the first patch after launch disrupted the game’s original fluid attacking and defensive rhythm, and subsequent updates never managed to restore it to its initial state.
This statement directly responds to one of the biggest criticisms surrounding FC 26. The official team’s intention is to avoid repeating that mistake and prevent rushed changes based on early trends.
From a positive perspective, avoiding aggressive early changes is a sensible approach, but leaving obvious problems unresolved for too long can also create negative consequences. The official team needs to find a balance between being too aggressive and being too passive.
Overall, these developer notes send a positive signal, particularly when it comes to reducing mindless defending and increasing the importance of manual control. IGGM.com believes that if the official team can carefully adjust the game’s balance, it will help create a more stable gameplay environment.
